| The Trade and Industry Minister, Mr Alan Kyeremanteng has stated that government will continue to provide a conducive environment for industries in Ghana to flourish to assist in accessing opportunities in the European and the American markets. He added that government would also provide the necessary institutional support to improve access to technical assistance, finance, and skilled labour, among others. |
These were disclosed by Mr. Kyeremanteng yesterday at the commissioning of SIXTEEN 47 Ghana Limited, a Ghanaian company affiliate, established to produce garments to the specifications of the United Kingdom Company, for sale in the UK .
According to the Trade Minister, SIXTEEN 47 (GH) Ltd is one of the companies selected to participate in the Export Action Programme for Garments and Textiles, under the Presidential Special Initiative. He noted that the Ghana Trade Policy would enable Ghana to achieve a middle-income status by 2012 thus becoming a leading agro-industry country in Africa .
The policy, the Trade and Industry Minister stated, has also been designed to ensure a consistent and stable policy environment within the private sector and consumers to operate effectively. He said, one challenge the company faces is in the area of supply capacity, quality and competitiveness, but assured them of government’s readiness to help find solution to the problem..
Mr Alan Kyeremanteng urged workers of the company to dedicate themselves and be committed to their work to ensure that, the company achieves its objective for which it had been established.
The British High Commissioner, Mr. Gordon Wetherell congratulated SIXTEEN 47, for adding value to its production and added that, the establishment of the company represents an important and productive link between Britain and Ghana .
The Company is meeting market demand in the UK while generating economic activity and employment in Ghana , this Mr. Wetherell noted will make the Golden Age of Business in Ghana a reality.
The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Ms. Helen Teague, said the company has enjoyed support from the PSI and Trade and Industry Ministry for the past three years.
The company’s garments made with the designer label ‘French and Teague’ are sold to premier outlets such as Harrods, Liberty ’s and Selfridges in the UK . It also produces exclusively from the website and for export market purposely and has 25 people employed currently.
She appealed to the banks to be flexible on their demand for collateral security to enable the company expand and employ more people.
